Timmins teen faces stunt driving, impaired charges

The accused was stopped after going more than 130 km/h in a 80 zone
speeding highway

KIRKLAND LAKE – On May 23, 2020 at approximately 4:35 p.m., members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for going more than 130 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone, on Hwy 66 in Eby Township.

Further investigation revealed that there was open containers of liquor and cannabis readily available in the vehicle and that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

As a result, Claude Courchesne, age 19, of Timmins, Ontario, has been charged with the following:   

  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC), 
  • Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Speed by 50 or more km/h, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA),  
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container or Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA); and  
  • Drive vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available - contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act, 2017(CCA2017).  

The driver was issued a 90 day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the motor vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 9, 2020, in Kirkland Lake.
