Timmins resident facing trafficking charge after Cobalt traffic stop

COBALT – On Jan. 8, 2021 shortly before 10:30 p.m., members from the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting pro-active patrols downtown Cobalt.   

Officers stopped a motor vehicle on Miller Avenue, for a sobriety check and further investigation revealed that the driver had consumed suspected controlled substances.  

A search of the driver incident to arrest, yielded concealed weapons, a quantity of suspected controlled substances and over $500. A search of the passenger, yielded a quantity of suspected controlled substances and over $3,700.

As a result, the driver, Colin McGillivary, a 32-year-old resident of Welland has been arrested and charged with:  

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), 
  • Carrying concealed weapon (two counts), contrary to section 90 of the CC, 
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purposes (three counts), contrary to section 88 of the CC,  
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC,  
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) (three counts); and  
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA.  

The passenger, Amanda LaChapelle, a 34-year-old resident of Timmins has been arrested and charged with:  

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (three counts); and  
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC.

Both accused have been held for bail and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
