In an effort to reduce the number of incidents of theft from parked vehicles, the Timmins Police is launching its annual “Lock It or Lose It” campaign.

Typically, there is a noted uptick in these types of thefts as shoppers are leaving their recent purchases in their vehicles as they shop leading up to Christmas.

In order to address this issue, Timmins Police officers will be attending various municipal parking lots as well as parking lots of area shopping centres to inspect parked vehicles to ensure they are locked to prevent theft.

A reminder notice will be affixed to vehicles found to be “insecure”. This message is intended to reach anyone who treats their vehicle like a storage facility as this practice is not in keeping with any form of crime prevention strategy.

If it’s valuable, it does not belong in an unattended vehicle. Wallets, purses, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and all other valuable items should not be stored in a vehicle or at the very least, hidden from public view.

Theft from a vehicle is a crime of opportunity and everyday citizens must do their part to “harden the target”   Nothing says “NO” to a prospective thief like a locked door.

The Timmins Police hope that a few basic crime prevention practices will serve to benefit the community we serve.
