Timmins man charged after police find suspicious homemade device

A number of homes have been evacuated on Tony Avenue after an improvised explosive device (IED) was located by Timmins Police.

A Timmins man is facing a number of charges after an incident that led to a number of houses being evacuated yesterday.

While Timmins Police were executing a search warrant at a Tony Avenue resident Feb. 4 a suspicious homemade device was found. Nearby homes were evacuated and the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to dispose of the device.

During the search, officers seized a variety of, a quantity of cocaine, other controlled substances, a loaded homemade prohibited firearm, a prohibited folding knife.

Chad Schultz, 42, of Timmins has been charged with:

  • Careless Storage of a Firearm / Ammunition contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada - Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm contrary to the Criminal Code of  Canada 
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm contrary to the Criminal  Code of Canada 
  • Possession of a Loaded Restricted or Prohibited Firearm contrary to the Criminal Code  of Canada
  • 2 counts of Possession of a Controlled Substances contrary to the Controlled Drug and  Substances Act  

Police say the accused is in police custody. A bail hearing is slated for today.
