Timmins man charged after ditched truck leads to extensive search

A Timmins man is facing charges after a vehicle was ditched north of the Kapuskasing River on May 18.

KAPUSKASING - A Timmins man is facing half a dozen charges after a truck was found ditched in the Kapuskasing area. 

On May 18 just before 2:30 a.m., James Bay OPP was called to a single motor vehicle crash after a truck was found in the ditch on Fred Flatt Road north of the Kapuskasing River. 

While it looked like the vehicle had rolled over, there was no one at the scene.

An extensive search of the area was done and included the Kapuskasing Fire Department, Ministry of Natural Resources, and OPP's emergency response team, canine unit, forensic identification unit and aviation services. 

"Shortly after 12:30 p.m., police located the driver, in a wooded area on Fred Flatt Road, with no significant injuries. Upon speaking with the driver police determined that they had been consuming an alcoholic beverage," said OPP. 

A 41-year-old Timmins man is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Dangerous operation
  • Fail to remain
  • Fail to report accident
  • Driver - fail to properly wear seat belt
  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero
  • Driver - fail to surrender licence

The accused was released from police custody and is slated to appear in court on June 17. Their driver's licence is suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
