The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred in February of this year in the north end of the city. Timmins Police Service officers responded to a call for service regarding a dispute that centered on a dog being taken and withheld from its lawful and rightful owner.

Based on the investigation into the matter, it was determined that a Timmins man had taken the dog without color of right or lawful entitlement. Responding Timmins Police Service officers exhausted all reasonable efforts to resolve the matter between the aggrieved parties.

It was deemed necessary to obtain and execute a Criminal Code Search Warrant to enter a residence on Emilie Street and secure the 12 year old black lab and return the dog to its owner on Saturday, July 11.

The suspect was located later the same day by the Timmins Police Service. The suspect became assaultive towards the responding Timmins Police officers but was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

As a result of the incident, Jason Van de Kraats, 42, of Timmins, has been charged with:

- Theft Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

- Assault a Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

- Resist a Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Van de Kraats was released from police custody but must attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on Sept. 8 to answer to the charges laid against him.
