Theft suspect strikes officer following arrest: police

Police say the officer received a facial injury that required medical attention

After being arrested on theft-related charges, a Timmins man allegedly struck a local police officer. 

Timmins Police responded to a theft-in-progress at a Riverside Drive big box store on the evening of Jan. 26. The suspect had allegedly stolen about $50 in merchandise and fled on foot. 

Officers located the man and brought him to the police station. While the accused was being processed, Timmins Police says he struck an officer, who received a facial injury that required medical attention. 

"The suspect was eventually subdued and lodged in a cell," reads the news release.

A 27-year-old man from Timmins is charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

He is in police custody and is slated for a bail hearing today.
