Suspicious person call leads to theft charges

Police say the accused stole a number of items from a store before fleeing in a vehicle

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft-related offences stemming from an incident that occurred during the evening hours of Friday, Feb. 18 at a Riverside Drive big box store in Timmins.

A Timmins Police Service officer responded to the call for service regarding a suspicious person who had attended at the retail outlet and proceeded to steal a number of items, and fled the scene in a passenger vehicle.

Responding Timmins Police officers were able to identify and locate the vehicle in question and performed a traffic stop based on the theft details provided to them.

The suspect fled from the vehicle as it was being stopped and was eventually arrested near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Joseph Street and was taken into police custody along with a number of recovered stolen items.

As a result of the incident, Joanne Wynne, 40, of Timmins, has been charged with: 

  • Theft Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Fail to Comply with Undertaking contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Wynne was released from police custody at a bail hearing on the strength of an Undertaking which now compels her to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins on Mar. 23 to answer to the charges laid against her.
