Suspect arrested in shoplifting investigation

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred on Thursday, Jan. 27 at a Riverside Drive big box retail store in Timmins.

A Timmins Police Service officer responded to the call for service regarding a man who had filled a shopping cart with merchandise and fled the store without making any attempts to pay for the items.

Despite being confronted by store personnel, a total of $347.16 worth of merchandise had been taken by the male suspect.

Based on the description and video surveillance provided to the police, the responding Timmins Police officer was able to identify, locate, and arrest the male suspect a short time later and took him into custody.

Upon arrest, the stolen items were found in the suspect’s possession and were eventually returned to the retailer.

As a result of the incident, Daniel Kataquapit, 32 of Timmins, has been charged with:
    •    theft under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused person remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
