Second suspect arrested in Temiskaming Shores break-in investigation

30-year-old Cobalt resident faces numerous charges

Members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a second accused in relation to the break and enter on Main Street from July 29, 2021 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

On July 29 shortly before 2 a.m., the Temiskaming OPP received a call for a break and enter in progress.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a perpetrator broke into a business and was still inside. The individual attempted to flee the scene by crawling into the ceiling. A short time after, the accused fell through the tiles and was immediately arrested by police.

On Aug. 10, 2021, while police were investigating an unrelated matter in the Town of Cobalt, an individual was recognized by police as being wanted for the break and enter. When police approached the individual he fled northbound on foot near the tracks by a wooded area.

A search was conducted by the Northeast Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the OPP Canine (K9) Unit, while the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was flown over the area. The accused was not located at this time.

On Aug. 16, 2021, an officer was conducting pro-active patrols on Jamieson Street in the Town of Cobalt, when the accused was observed and arrested.

A search incident to arrest yielded a quantity of pills.

As a result, Donald Ash, a 30-year-old resident of Cobalt, has been charged with:
    •    break, enter a place - commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    mischief Under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC
    •    escape lawful custody, contrary to section 145(1) of the CC
    •    fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC (two counts)
    •    disobeying order of court, contrary to section 127 of the CC (two counts)
    •    possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC

The accused was held for a Bail Hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
