Search warrant in Cochrane leads to significant seizure

On Jan. 1, 2021 at 3:45 p.m. the Ontario Provincial Police Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) with the assistance of the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9) executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence on Victoria Avenue in Cochrane.  

Police seized suspected opioids (fentanyl), crack cocaine and cocaine, as well as a pellet gun and two imitation firearms. Furthermore, police seized approximately $3,500 in Canadian currency. The total estimated street value of the seizure is approximately $80,000.

As a result of the investigation, two people have been arrested and charged.

Dante Cunningham, 19-years-old, of Scarborough has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (2 counts),
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC), and
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC.

A 17-year-old from Whitby has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (two counts),
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Possession of Weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC, and
  • Fail to comply with probation, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC (3 counts).

Dante Cunningham was released from custody on a Recognizance of Bail and the 17-year-old was remanded into custody. Both are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in Cochrane.
