Schumacher cyclist killed in crash with tractor trailer: police

A 59-year-old Schumacher man has died following a crash early this morning.

According to Timmins Police, the collision happened around 5:30 a.m. today (Sept. 8) on Highway 101 just east of Schumacher when an eastbound tractor trailer hit an eastbound cyclist.

The cyclist, Robert Morin, was brought to hospital, where police say he succumbed to his injuries. Next of kin has been notified.

According to Lake Shore Gold, a subsidiary of Pan American Silver, one of their contractors was involved in an accident on Highway 101. 

"At this time we are still gathering information on the incident and wish to express our thoughts for the individuals involved and their families," reads an update from Marcel Cardinal, director of environmental and sustainability.

"Authorities are currently investigating the incident and will provide more information as it becomes available."

Police are still at the scene of the crash. Timmins Police technical traffic collision investigations and the forensic unit are on scene to determine the cause of the crash.

Traffic delays are expected in the area, and alternate routes are encouraged.

"The tractor-trailer unit is being subjected to a thorough mechanical fitness inspection as part of the investigative process," according to a Timmins Police news release.
