Resident finds handgun in cassette deck purchased from second hand store

Police are investigating the firearm to see if it has been used in any unresolved crimes

The Timmins Police Service is in the midst of completing its investigation into a recovered .22 caliber handgun located by a Timmins resident on Sunday March 14.

A Timmins resident located a .22 caliber handgun contained within a cassette deck recently purchased at a second hand store in Timmins. The resident, having made the unusual discovery, notified the Timmins Police Service without delay.

The firearm has been subjected to initial investigative scrutiny by the Timmins Police – Forensic Identification Unit.

The firearm is being shipped to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for intensive ballistic testing in an effort to determine if the firearm has been used in any unsolved crimes. Attempts to locate the genuine owner, if in fact there is one, are also underway.

The Timmins Police Service is thankful to the responsible citizen who alerted the police about his discovery and took appropriate steps to assist with the investigation currently underway.
