Police seize $39K of suspected opioids, cocaine and methamphetamine

On Dec. 4, 2020, The Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit with the assistance of the South Porcupine OPP Crime Unit and The North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence on Tweedsmuir Road in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

Police seized drugs suspected to be Opioids (including Fentanyl), Cocaine and Methamphetamine. Total estimated street value of the seizure is $39,750. Police also seized over $8,000 in Canadian currency.

As a result, three people were arrested and charged.

Jessica Benson, age 35, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Damanni Browne, age 19, of Brampton, Ontario, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Abena Garwood, age 18, of Toronto, Ontario, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)(two counts),
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

The three accused were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice by video on Dec. 7, 2020.
