With bears coming out of hibernation, police are reminding people to be aware.

In the past week, Timmins Police have responded to a number of nuisance bear calls in the outer perimeter of the city.

"These calls are expected to increase in the short term before natural food sources become more plentiful," reads a Timmins police news release.

To help avoid attracting wild animals, residents are reminded to carefully store garbage until collection day and restrict using bird feeders.

"It stands to reason that a bear sighting does not necessarily merit a police response but any circumstances where a person's safety is jeopardized by the presence of an aggressive or menacing bear, the Timmins Police should be called without delay," said police.
