Timmins Police is reminding people not to believe everything they see on social media.

Recently, police say "fictitious and baseless" posts have been shared on Facebook.

"There is no substance to these posts and no threat to public safety exists based on the content of these spurious postings," said police in a news release.

The posts in question feature the photo of a man or men who are claimed to attack women. One of the fake posts says the assault happens after being invited into a home for food, while another says it's fugitives on the run.

"These posts have no investigative foundation and appear to be intended to promote public fear and anxiety," said police.

"It is hoped that those persons who received these posts will use good judgment in regards to posts that are generated with this intent."

Police say people should view posts of the nature involved with an "appropriate amount of careful scrutiny and skepticism."
