With more than 150 evacuees from Fort Hope First Nation in town, Timmins Police have issued a traffic advisory.

Police are expecting there will be an increase in pedestrians on Riverside Drive, especially between where the evacuees are staying at the Ramada Inn and the nearby Timmins Square.

"Shoulders in certain portions of the stretch of roadway are narrow so motorists are urged to be particularly alert to pedestrian traffic," reads the news release.

"As always, reduced speeds allow for enhanced opportunities to react to unforeseen or unexpected traffic hazards."

The advisory notes many of the evacuees are young and don't have "significant experience with larger volumes of traffic."

"The Timmins Police Service will be monitoring the area in search of motorists who are in violation of speed limits or engaging in aggressive driving. Motorists found to be in violation of the Highway Traffic Act can expect a firm but fair response at the roadside from the Timmins Police Service," according to the advisory.
