Over $130K in property recovered following break and enter investigation

Police say they arrived in the area and located the accused leaving the scene

On March 18, 2021, frontline members of the Kirkland Lake and South Porcupine Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a Break and Enter on Watabeag Road in Nordica Township.

Police arrived in the area and located the accused leaving the scene. The accused was subsequently arrested and transported to the Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment.

The investigation continued and a search warrant was executed at a residence on Valley View Road in Otto Township by the Kirkland Lake OPP Crime Unit with the assistance of the South Porcupine OPP Crime Unit, the North East Region Community Street Crime Unit and frontline members of the Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment. The North East Region Forensic Identification Services also assisted in the investigation.

As a result, multiple break and enters and thefts have been solved and over $130,000 in property has been recovered by police.

Derek Lang, 36 years-of-age, from Otto Township, has been charged with the following:

  • Break and enter, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC) (10 Counts),
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC (Six Counts),
  • Possession of property obtained by crime Under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC (Four Counts),
  • Mischief over $5,000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC,
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC,
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC (Two Counts),
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC (Two Counts),
  • Theft of motor vehicle, contrary to section 333.1 of the CC(Two Counts) ,
  • Theft over $500, contrary to section 334(a) of the CC, and
  • Fail to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the CC (Two Counts).

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on March 24, 2021.
