Open liquor, cannabis found in vehicle during Highway 11 traffic stop: OPP

DRIFTWOOD - Officers found open liquor and cannabis readily available during a Highway 11 traffic stop.

On April 7 just after 4 p.m., a James Bay OPP officer spotted a vehicle going at inconsistent speeds and swerving from the shoulder to the centre line on Highway 11 in Driftwood.

The vehicle was pulled over and the officer determined the driver had been drinking. They were brought back to the Cochrane detachment for further testing.

Open liquor was also found in the vehicle, and cannabis was readily available.

"The OPP reminds everyone that impaired driving continues to be a serious and preventable crime with potentially devastating consequences. We urge all drivers to make responsible choices before getting behind the wheel. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911 and report it," said police in the news release.

A 57-year-old woman from Tiny Township is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The accused was released from police custody and is slated to appear in court in Cochrane on April 23. Her licence was also suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven days.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
