Number of homes evacuated in Timmins after police find explosive device (3 photos)

The scene has been cleared by OPP, and Timmins Police have released the scene.

ORIGINAL STORY

A number of homes have been evacuated on Tony Avenue after an improvised explosive device (IED) was located by Timmins Police.

According to police, the device was located while officers were executing a search warrant related to a separate investigation. Homes "within the line of sight of the residence have been evacuated."

Tony Avenue is located off Pine Street South in the Sheridan Trailer Park near the Timmins Memorial Cemetery.

The area has been cordoned off. The OPP Explosive Disposal Unit is en route.

There is no direct threat to public safety right now.

"The Timmins Police are continuing with their investigation into this matter in regards to any violations of the Criminal Code that may have occurred involving this type of device or any other weapons located at the scene," reads a news release.

"The Timmins Police appreciate the level of compliance and cooperation received from residents in the immediate area thus far in regards to this matter."
