NEWS RELEASE
TIMMINS POLICE SERVICE

With anticipated milder weather taking hold in the area, the Timmins Police Service is issuing a Thin Ice Advisory in regards to snowmobile operators, ice fishermen, and persons venturing outward on area walking trails.

Ice conditions on frozen waterways in our area will be negatively affected by warmer weather which could potentially pose a certain level of hazard on trails used to cross frozen ponds, streams, rivers and lakes.

With the warmer weather, the thickness of the ice on any body of water will likely be reduced and render it unsafe for pedestrian or snowmobile crossings in certain areas.

Heightened attention is called for in regards to this set of circumstances.

The use of alternate routes by pedestrians so that they can avoid areas with uncertain ice thicknesses is recommended.

The level of risk is commensurate with the water depth of the frozen body of water being crossed.

The effects of hypothermia can be detrimental and almost immediate, depending of the level of exposure to anyone who breaks through the ice.

This advisory is strictly a guideline and is issued with public safety in mind. Being water wise is always beneficial and reduces the risk attached to venturing out carelessly or without due care and attention.
