Man accused of brandishing knife after forcing his way into apartment

37-year-old from Timmins faces numerous charges

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with break-in and robbery related offences stemming from an incident that occurred early yesterday (July 2) morning at a Fifth Avenue apartment in Timmins.

The Timmins Police Service responded to a call for service where at approximately 2:30 a.m. [it is alleged that] a male suspect forcibly gained entry into an apartment while wearing a disguise. The suspect proceeded to accost both occupants of the apartment while brandishing a knife while completing a theft of loose change. At one point the suspect struck both occupants of the apartment resulting in injury to both parties.

The suspect fled on foot but was arrested a short while later by the Timmins Police Service. A quantity of stolen money was recovered by the Timmins Police Service.

Both occupants of the apartment received medical attention for their respective injuries.

As a result of the incident, Billy Cheechoo (Iahtail), 37, of Timmins, has been charged with:
    •    Break and enter with intent contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Use disguise with intent contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Robbery contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    two counts of assault with a weapon contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Mischief contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused person remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
