Loaded firearm found after police call for suspected impaired driver

On May 14, 2023, shortly after 7:30 p.m., members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in possession of a firearm in the Town of Matachewan.

Police located the vehicle and determined that the operator was under the influence of alcohol. Police also located a loaded firearm during the investigation.  The accused was arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

Further investigation revealed that the accused was also on weapons prohibition orders.

A search warrant was executed and additional firearms were located and seized.

As a result, a person has been arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order - four counts
  • Handle firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition - two counts
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
  • Having liquor in open container in unauthorized place
  • Assault
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.
