Handgun, controlled substances seized by police

The Timmins Police Service executed a Criminal Code Search Warrant at a Fifth Avenue apartment early this morning in regards to an investigation focused on weapons.

The Search Warrant was executed by members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) working in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Division and platoon officers.

The search resulted in the arrest of two men and the seizure of a loaded handgun and a quantity of controlled substances.

At this stage in the investigation, the Timmins Police Service has charged Nelson Lasu, 22, of Toronto and Troy Etherington, 27, of Timmins, with:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Careless storage of a firearm contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession of a loaded or restricted firearm contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession of a controlled substance contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act 
  • Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Etherington stands charged with additional counts of: 

  • Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition Order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Lasu stands charged with additional counts of: 

  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Failure to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Failure to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Failure to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Both accused parties remain in police custody awaiting respective bail hearings slated for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against them.
