Drugs seized during theft arrest

Responding officers also recovered $400 in stolen items

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred on Thursday, March 3 at a Riverside Drive retail store in Timmins.

A Timmins Police Service officer responded to the call for service regarding a person who had attended at the building and proceeded to steal a number of items, and fled on foot when confronted.

Based on the investigation, the responding Timmins Police officer was able to identify, locate, and arrest the male suspect in the store parking lot and recover over $400 worth of stolen merchandise.

A quantity of a controlled substance was located on the suspect’s person upon arrest.

As a result of the incident, Michael Laporte, 30 of Timmins, has been charged with:
    •    theft under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    two counts of fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    possession of a controlled substance contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

Laporte remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
