KAPUSKASING - Two separate traffic stops within 30 minutes both led to the drivers being issued three-day driver's licence suspensions.

On Feb. 3, 2024, shortly after 1 a.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Riverside Drive in Kapuskasing, when a vehicle was stopped. The driver had been consuming alcohol and police issued the breath demand for the Approved Screening Device (ASD), which resulted in the driver registering an "Alert".

As a result of the investigation, the 26-year-old driver from Kapuskasing was issued a three-day driver's licence suspension for having a blood alcohol concentration within the Warn Range. The driver was also charged with:

  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero
  • Window obstructed
  • Unauthorized red and blue lights

Then, also on Feb. 3, shortly before 1:30 a.m., the James Bay OPP conducted a traffic stop on Cité des Jeunes Boulevard. The driver had been consuming alcohol and police issued the breath demand for the Approved Screening Device (ASD), which resulted in the driver registering an "Alert".

As a result of the investigation, the 29-year-old driver from Kapuskasing was issued a three-day driver's licence suspension for having a blood alcohol concentration within the Warn Range. The driver was also charged with:

  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence

If the driver registers a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) from .05 to .079 (known as the "warn range"), the driver will receive an immediate driver's licence suspension:

  • First occurrence, a driver will be suspended for three days.
  • Second occurrence in a five-year period, the driver will be immediately suspended for seven days and the driver must undergo a remedial alcohol-education program.
  • Third or subsequent time in a five-year period, the driver will be immediately suspended for 30 days and the driver must undergo a remedial alcohol-treatment program and have an ignition interlock condition placed on the driver's licence for six months.

If the driver chooses not to install an ignition interlock device, the driver must not drive until the condition is removed from their licence.
