Driver pulled over for speeding charged with impaired

A traffic stop for speeding led to a driver being arrested for impaired driving in Cochrane.

On Feb. 18, 2024, shortly after 2 a.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a vehicle on Highway 652 Street in Cochrane for speeding.

The driver was determined to have consumed an alcohol beverage and was arrested and transported to the Cochrane detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation (a 36-year-old man) of Cochrane was charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Speeding - 25 km/hr over posted limit

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 20, 2024, in Cochrane.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The OPP reminds everyone to make responsible choices when behind the wheel. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.
