Driver facing drug, weapons charges in Kirkland Lake

The charges come after police responded to a report of a person allegedly asleep in the driver's seat of a vehicle

On Feb. 4, 2021, frontline members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a person asleep in the driver's seat of a motor vehicle on Second Street in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

After a conversation with the person, police believed that the driver was under the influence of drugs and was placed under arrest. The accused resisted arrest and was taken into custody. Further investigation resulted in the seizure of drugs suspected to be methamphetamine and cannabis. Also seized was a prohibited weapon (brass knuckles).

As a result, Shane Rivest, 31 years of age, of Grenfell Township, Ont. was charged with the following:

  • Resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon, contrary to section 93(a) of the CC,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act,
  • Have care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake, on March 25, 2021.
