Driver clocked at more than 80 km/h over speed limit near Kirkland Lake

Police say the driver was going over 170 km/h in a 90 zone

KIRKLAND LAKE – On Oct. 6, 2020 at approximately 10:42 p.m., a member of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for going more than 170 kilometers per hour (Km/h) in a posted 90 Km/h zone on Highway 11 in Grenfell Township.

Further investigation revealed that the driver was currently on an Undertaking and was breaching the release conditions.

As a result, Hakeem Francis, age 25, of Toronto, has been charged with the following: 

  • Fail to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),  
  • Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - speeding by 50 Km/h or More, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and 
  • Speeding - contrary to section 128 of the HTA. 

The vehicle was impounded and the driver's licence has been suspended for seven days.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear for the Ontario Court of Justice on Dec. 10, 2020, in Kirkland Lake.
