Driver charged with impaired in Kapuskasing

Police say the driver was speeding when pulled over

KAPUSKASING - On Aug. 25, 2021, members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a speeding motor vehicle on Government Road in the Town of Kapuskasing.

Police located the vehicle and spoke to the driver of the motor vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the driver was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages.

As a result, the driver was arrested, driver's licence suspended, and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Tavis Gillies, 24 years old of Corbeil, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act
  • Possess More Than One Licence, contrary to section 35(1)(e) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Drive Motor Vehicle, No Permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the HTA
  • Speeding 1-49 Kilometers per Hour Over Posted Limit, contrary to section 128 of the HTA
  • Fail to Surrender Insurance Card, contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Oct. 4, 2021 in Kapuskasing.
