Driver accused of stealing vehicle following crash on Highway 624

Police say the accused was in possession of suspected fentanyl

KIRKLAND LAKE - On May 21, 2021, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 624 in Skead Township.

The investigation revealed that the motor vehicle had been stolen from a residence on Mini Farm Road in Armstrong Township.

On May 22, 2021, police received a complaint of a suspicious person on Highway 66 in McGarry Township, police attended the area and located the person. While speaking with them it was determined that they were responsible for the theft of the motor vehicle. Further investigation resulted in the seizure of drugs suspected to be fentanyl.

As a result, Christopher Dashuk, 32 years of age, of North Bay, has been arrested and charged with the following;

  • Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Careless driving, contrary to section 130(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Fail to remain, contrary to section 200(1)(a) of the HTA
  • Fail to report accident, contrary to section 199(1) of the HTA

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 15, 2021, in Kirkland Lake.
