Cochrane resident faces firearm charges after noise complaint

COCHRANE - On Aug. 18, 2020, shortly after 9:00 p.m. members of the James Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call regarding loud noises coming from a property on Shelby Avenue, in the Town of Cochrane.

Police contained the area and arrested the accused at a nearby property.

Further investigation resulted in several charges being laid. 

A 20-year-old resident of Cochrane is charged with the following:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC),
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC (two counts)
  • Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the CC, and
  • Mischief - domestic, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date, in the Town of Cochrane.   

The OPP will not be releasing the name of the accused in order to protect the identity of the victim.
