Citizen's arrest leads to drug trafficking charges for Gowganda man

JAMES TOWNSHIP - On March 14, 2021 shortly after 12:30 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call for a break and enter in progress on Highway 560 in the Township of James.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a perpetrator entered a home and was detained by the home owner by way of a citizen's arrest.

Police attended and arrested the accused.

A search incident to arrest, yielded a quantity of a suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl a street value of over $5,000.

The accused was transported to Temiskaming Detachment for processing.

On March 14, 2021 shortly after 8:30 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment Crime Unit and members of the North East Region (NER) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) executed a drug search warrant on 9th Street in the Town of Gowganda.

Once inside the residence, the officers located and seized drug paraphernalia, a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine and cocaine, a street value of $1,280.

Scott Friedrich, a 35-year-old resident of Gowganda, has been arrested and charged with:
    •    Break, enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1) of the CC,
    •    Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
    •    Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
    •    Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CC, and
    •    Possession of a Schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA.

The accused was held for a Bail Hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The Temiskaming OPP would like to remind the public, to report all suspicious activity to police. Try to obtain as much information as possible while assuring your safety, and do not interfere with the crime scene.
