Attempted murder charge laid after Moosonee fire: OPP

No one was injured in the fire, police say

MOOSONEE - On Aug. 17, 2021, the James Bay Detachments Crime Unit and the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to a residential fire on Hutchison Road in Moosonee. No one was injured in the fire.

Members of the James Bay Detachments Crime Unit, James Bay OPP, along with the Moosonee Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Marshal were involved with the investigation. Subsequently, one person was arrested and charged.

Sheldon, Metatawabin, 28 years old, from Moosonee is charged with:

  • Arson - Disregard for human life (two counts), contrary to section 433(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Attempt to commit murder, contrary to section 239(1)(b) of the CC

The accused person is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 18, 2021 in Moosonee.
