Arrest made in Cobalt counterfeit currency investigation

COBALT - On July 30, 2020 shortly before 5 a.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a warrant on Prospect Avenue in the Town of Cobalt.

Officers had commenced an investigation into alleged counterfeit bills that occurred between July 24 and July 29, 2020 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

As a result of recent investigations, Kevin Turpes-Cotes, 35 years old of Temiskaming Shores, has been arrested and charged with:
    •    Uttering counterfeit money - utter, contrary to section 452(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) (nine counts), and
    •    Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

Residents and businesses are reminded to check bills carefully during every transaction. If you suspect a bill may be counterfeit, report it to police immediately.
