Altercation leads to assault charge in Virginiatown

A 53-year-old from Virginiatown is also facing break and enter as well as mischief charges

On Aug. 28, 2021, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an assault that occurred on Webster Street in Virginatown.

The investigation revealed that an altercation had taken place resulting in the victim being assaulted and suffering minor injuries.

As a result, Shelley Copithorn, 53 years of age, from Virginiatown, was arrested and charged with;

  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the CC
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on Oct. 21, 2021.

The investigation remains ongoing and the Kirkland Lake OPP is requesting that any person with information regarding this incident to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
