Accused boat thief also faces impaired driving charges

Police say they caught up with him after the stolen trailer and boat became disconnected from the vehicle he was driving, coming to rest at the roadside and sustaining heavy damage

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with impaired driving-related offences stemming from a strange incident reported to police during the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 8.

Timmins Police received a report of a man driving a Pontiac passenger vehicle with a stolen boat motor and trailer in tow which had been taken from a Vimy Street address.

While in flight from the scene of the theft, the trailer became disconnected from the vehicle coming to rest at the roadside and sustaining considerable damage. The Timmins Police located the man in the vehicle in front of a Fifth Avenue address.

Based on the observations of the physical demeanour of the driver made by the responding Timmins Police Service officers, the driver was arrested and taken into police custody.

As a result of the incident, Ryan Leroux, 31, of Timmins, has been charged with:

  • Operate Motor Vehicle While Impaired contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Theft Over $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Mischief Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Drive while Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No insurance contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No plates contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released from police custody on the strength of an Undertaking requiring that he attend Provincial Court in Timmins on Sept. 8 to answer to the charges laid against him.
