On March 1, 2022 shortly after 2 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for a compliance check on Highway 65 in the Township of Kerns.

Further investigation revealed that an individual was not at his residence and was in contravention of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA).

A short time after, the individual was located and stopped on Whitewood Avenue in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

As a result, a 65-year-old resident of Kerns Township has been charged with:
    •    Failure to comply with an order prohibiting or subjecting to any condition the entry into Canada, contrary to section 58 of the Quarantine Act with a set fine of $5,000 plus surcharge

The OPP is doing its part to support the Ontario Government's Health Emergency Declaration to limit the transmission of COVID-19. It is important that the public understands that there are consequences for individuals who defy the EMCPA that is in place.
