Five new CCTV cameras are in use downtown Timmins and in Porcupine.

These cameras are in addition to the existing CCTV infrastructure throughout the City of Timmins, said Timmins Police in a news release.

The $50,000 cost was split between the local police department and Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Ontario Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy.

"The purpose of the cameras is to provide investigative support for police and prevent crime through general deterrence," reads the announcement.

The cameras have been installed and have been operation since Oct. 21.

"In order to comply with the privacy standards set out by the office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, all areas in which CCTV cameras were installed have been identified with signs indicating that the areas are under recorded surveillance," said police.

The new cameras are located:

  • Pine Street at Fifth Avenue
  • Cedar Street at Fifth Avenue
  • Balsam Street and Algonquin Boulevard
  • Birch Street at Sixth Avenue
  • King Street near Public Works
