18-year-old accused of fleeing police on snowmobile

Kirkland Lake man faces numerous charges

On Dec. 30, 2019, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of Ontario Provincial Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorized snow vehicle (MSV) in the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ont. for a driving violation. The operator of the MSV accelerated away from the police cruiser and failed to stop for the officer.

As a result of the investigation, police were able to identify the operator of the MSV. On Jan. 11, 2019, Sylas Friesen, age 18, of Kirkland Lake, Ont., was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Flight from peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Drive - no insurance, contrary to section 12(1) of the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act (MSVA),
  • Speeding - in excess of 20 km/h, on Highway Where the limit is 50 km/h or less, contrary to section 14(1)(a)(i) of the MSVA,
  • Drive MSV, permit not issued, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the MSVA,
  • Fail to notify change of ownership, contrary to section 3(3) of the MSVA,
  • No licence - drive along highway, contrary to section 9(1) of the MSVA,
  • Disobey sign, contrary to Ontario Regulation (O-Reg) 804 section 4 of the MSVA, and
  • Fail to signal for turn, contrary to O-Reg 804 section 7(1) of the MSVA.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Feb. 13, 2020, in Kirkland Lake.
