17-year-old faces impaired driving charges in Kirkland Lake

KIRKLAND LAKE - On June 4, 2021 at approximately 11:46 p.m., members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general law enforcement patrols in the Town of Kirkland Lake when they stopped an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for a traffic violation on Fifth Street in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

Further investigation revealed that the operator was under the influence of alcohol.

As a result, a 17-year-old from Kirkland Lake, has been arrest and charged with the following:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (BAC) (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC
    •    Novice driver - BAC above zero, contrary to section 44.1(3) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
    •    Drive non-passenger ATV with a passenger, contrary to Ontario Regulation 316/03 section 19.2(a) of the HTA

The driver was issued a 90 day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the ATV was impounded for seven days.

The youth cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.
