17-year-old charged in snowmobile theft investigation

Police say machines were stolen in Temiskaming Shores and Englehart

TEMISKAMING SHORES - ENGLEHART - Members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in relation to a theft that occurred on Cedar Avenue in the City of Temiskaming Shores between 5 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2022.

On Jan. 31, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., police responded to a call for a stolen snow machine that was located on Queen Street in the City of Temiskaming Shores. Police attended and recovered the stolen snow machine.

On Feb. 1, 2022 shortly after 11 a.m., police responded to a call for a second stolen snow machine located in the Town of Englehart. Police attended Third Avenue and located the stolen snowmobile. The accused attempted to flee the scene an altercation ensued with police.

The youth was arrested and transported to the Temiskaming Detachment.

The 17-year-old resident of Temiskaming Shores who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), has been charged with:
    •    possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Youth Court of Justice on March 1, 2022 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The Temiskaming OPP would like to thank members of the public who assisted during this investigation. Both snowmobiles have now been located, a value of $40,000.
