Winter storm warning issued for Timmins and area

Winter storm warning in effect for:
    •    Timmins - Cochrane - Iroquois Falls
    •    Kirkland Lake - Englehart

Winter storm with 15 to 20 cm of snow and ice pellets Saturday through Sunday and blowing snow Sunday night into early Monday.

Wintery mixed precipitation associated with a winter storm will begin as snow Saturday then may change over to ice pellets with a risk of freezing rain overnight Saturday before changing back to snow Sunday afternoon. Total snow and ice pellet accumulations of 15 to 20 cm are expected.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

In addition, northwesterly wind gusts of 50 to 70 km/h are expected Sunday night into Monday morning resulting in very low visibility in blowing snow.

Environment Canada meteorologists continue to monitor this developing storm closely.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Freezing rain warning in effect for:
    •    New Liskeard - Temagami

Freezing rain later this evening or Sunday morning then strong winds with snow and blowing snow Sunday night into Monday morning.

Precipitation associated with a winter storm may begin as snow or ice pellets tonight then is forecast to quickly change to freezing rain late this evening or early Sunday morning. A transition to rain is then expected before a change back to snow Sunday afternoon or early evening.

In addition, westerly wind gusts to 80 km/h are possible Sunday night into Monday resulting in poor visibility in blowing snow.

Travel will become hazardous due to significant and sudden reduction to visibility.

Environment Canada meteorologists continue to monitor this developing storm closely.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Utility outages may occur.

Blizzard warning in effect for:
    •    Fraserdale - Pledger Lake
    •    Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls

Blizzard conditions with near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow expected Sunday afternoon and evening.

Snow, heavy at times, is forecast to begin after midnight Saturday night and taper off late Sunday night. Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are likely. Meanwhile, northerly wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h are expected Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning. The combination of falling snow and strong gusty winds will result in blizzard conditions with widespread near zero visibility Sunday afternoon and evening.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Limit outdoor activities.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least four hours.
