A Wilson Avenue house built in the early 1900s is the first designated heritage property in the city.

Tonight, Timmins council approved a bylaw designating the Mackechnie house at 438 Wilson Ave. as being of cultural value or interest.

The log home on the north side of the street next to the Ford dealership has only had two owners. It was built in 1925 by Harry W. Darling and sold to Dr. Graeme Mackechnie in 1947.

In a recent interview with TimminsToday, Susan Mackechnie Paupst said their family has many wonderful memories in the 74 years they have owned the house, but the best are from the holiday season.

“It’s the absolute most beautiful house to spend Christmas in,” she said. “My mother used the fireplace all the time. All our stockings were there.

“At Christmas, it was just sort of magical there.”

A report recommending the house receive the historical designation outlines the heritage attributes.

The highlighted features include the house's location, the exposed logs demonstrating the original construction, the windows, the enclosed porch, the stone mantelpiece inside and the outside construction of the chimney.
