Wildlife collision kills popular swim coach

Investigation revealed that a moose was standing on the crest of a hill.

NORTH BAY — A collision with a moose killed a motorist on Highway 11 just north of North Bay yesterday evening.

OPP say at 9:30 p.m. members of the North Bay OPP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 in Notman Township.

Investigation revealed that a moose was standing on the crest of a hill in the northbound lane when the northbound vehicle hit the moose.

The driver, and only person in the vehicle, Leonard Lear, 63, from Englehart was pronounced dead at the scene.

A reader tells Village Media that Lear was the head coach of the Temiscaming Northern Loons Swim Team and is well known in the swimming community in Northern Ontario.  He was returning from the Ontario Division III Team Championships held at the Markham, Ontario PanAm Centre this past weekend.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators is assisting with this ongoing investigation.   

Emergency Medical Services and the North Bay Fire Department also were called.
