With the city seeing an increased quantity of snow, the Timmins Police Service would like to remind residents that safety measures must be taken when clearing snow from driveways using an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV).

Police have observed residents using ATVs to clear snow from their driveways, not wearing a helmet, which is dangerous when operating on an incline or in slippery conditions. Residents are reminded that helmets must be worn. On private property, helmets must be worn if the driver is not the owner of the property.

In addition to helmet laws, permits must be displayed and carried, and the driver must be 12 years of age, unless under close adult supervision. All-Terrain Vehicles must not be driven on roadways unless to cross directly when the driver is at least 16 years old, has a driver’s license and is not carrying a passenger. Insurance is required for all ATVs.

As always, when operating an ATV, residents are reminded to exercise caution when riding an ATV and be aware of their surroundings and all approaching traffic.
