What to read during Black History Month

Reservations can be made by calling the Timmins Public Library

Timmins Public Library has put together a list of titles to read in honour of Black History Month.

The 2021 theme for Black History Month, which is marked annually throughout February, is The Future is Now.

Community members are invited to learn more about Black history and celebrate the achievements and contributions that Black Canadians and people of African descent have made to Canadian history.

Here are some books written by Canadian authors:

  • A Fly In A Pail Of Milk: The Herb Carnegie Story by Herb Carnegie, with updated revisions by Bernice Carnegie. Carnegie, who was a Canadian ice hockey player of Jamaican descent, played with the local Buffalo Ankerite Bisons team for a couple of years.
  • Brown Girl In The Ring by Nalo Hopkinson (Science fiction).

  • I Am A Japanese Writer by Dany Laferrière, translated by David Homel.

  • Shadd: The Life and Times of Mary Shadd Cary. It’s a biography of Mary Shadd Cary, the first black woman in North America who founded and edited a weekly newspaper called The Provincial Freeman. The paper was published in Windsor, Toronto, and Chatham in the 1850s.

  • Under My Skin by Orville Lloyd Douglas (Poetry, LGBTQ+)

  • Off Script: Living Out Loud by Marci Ien (Biography).

  • Ontario's African-Canadian Heritage: Collected Writings by Fred Landon, 1918-1967 (History).

  • Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan (Historical fiction).

  • Daughters of Silence by Rebecca Fisseha (Self-identity fiction).

The library has also prepared two surprise bags with children’s books in English and French for families to borrow and read during Black History Month. Each bag contains books, a craft and colouring pages.
