The former Whitney fire station is going up for sale.

This week, council took steps to put the old hall at 114 Dixon St. in Porcupine up for sale.

The two properties the building is located on have been merged into one, and the land has been declared surplus to the municipality to allow it to be sold through a request for proposal (RFP) process.

Director of community and development services Mark Jensen said a certified appraiser has valued the property at $250,000.

While the volunteer station in Porcupine operated out of the fire hall for decades, the department relocated to the Integrated Emergency Services Complex (IESC) at Northern College in 2018.

A staff report notes an asbestos material survey was done at the old hall in December 2015.

It confirmed asbestos in the vinyl floor tiles, “and that other materials such as roofing materials, caulking, mastic and firestop should be assumed to be asbestos containing, and should be sampled prior to renovation and/or demolition activities.”
