Virtual science shows receive big boost

Students in schools across Northeastern Ontario will continue to benefit from Science North’s educational programming, despite the organization’s Bluecoat scientists being restricted from visiting classrooms in person. 

In a typical year, close to 40,000 school-aged children visit Science North and Dynamic  Earth for hands-on programming and workshops. Current public health guidelines and field trip restrictions mean that access to experimental learning in now limited. Science  North has developed virtual learning packages to deliver STEM-based learning to schools from Smooth Rock Falls to Kapuskasing, Timmins, Temiskaming Shores, North  Bay and Sudbury. 

“Ontario Power Generation applauds Science North for their creativity and adaptability in pivoting their programming to a virtual format,” said Bruce Robertson, Vice President of OPG’s Eastern Region. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support such programming and bring the Live Science Shows to schools across the Northeast.” 

The live science shows will feature Science North Bluecoats performing experiments virtually with students, to continue to engage and inspire students in science and technology learning. The virtual shows were made possible through a donation of $25,000 by OPG’s Corporate Citizenship Program (CCP). 

Ashley Larose, Director of Development said “OPG has a been a great partner with  Science North for more than 20 years and this is another great example of their leadership. As a registered charity, Science North depends on contributions from our  corporate partners, whose funding is an important source of support for the work we  do in serving audiences across Northern Ontario.”  

The live science shows will feature Science North Bluecoats performing experiments virtually with students, to continue to engage and inspire students in science and technology learning. The virtual shows were made possible through a donation of  $25,000 by OPG’s Corporate Citizenship Program (CCP). Director of Education and  Northern Programs, Ryan Land, said “The generous funding from OPG will help  bring these virtual programs into classrooms across the Northeast. More students  will now have access to safe, fun and engaging science experiences.”  

OPG is a climate change leader and the largest electricity generator in the province,  providing more than half of the power Ontarians rely on every day. It is also one of the most diverse generators in North America, with expertise in nuclear,  hydroelectric, biomass, solar, and natural gas technologies.
