Instead of paying for parking, use your vehicle's four-way flashers to pick up curbside orders from downtown businesses.

Effective immediately, people can park at a metre and turn on their vehicle's four-ways to retrieve orders downtown Timmins instead of paying for parking, according to the City of Timmins. Bylaw officers will be monitoring and ticketing people taking advantage of the arrangement.

“We’ve come up with a solution that will hopefully encourage more people to shop local and use the option of curbside pickup to support our downtown businesses,” said Sherry Laneville, Enforcement Services supervisor, in an April 14 news release.

“Turn on your four-way flashers to indicate that you’re picking up an order, which typically takes only a few minutes.”

The province is currently under a state of emergency and stay-at-home order.

While some non-essential businesses are allowed to operate it is for curbside pickup only.

During the first wave of the pandemic last spring, the city offered free on-street parking downtown Timmins.

At municipal parking lots, the fees recently increased. Parking fines have also been hiked.

A monthly pass is now $50 plus HST, which is an increase of $5 over the past price. The change will see the cost for monthly parking passes increase by $5 every year to $2025 when the monthly cost to park in a downtown parking lot will be $75.

Parking fines have also increased.

The new price is $16 if paid within the first five days, and $20 after. The previous fine was $8 for the early-pay option and $12 after.

The fee changes were approved by council last year.
